After the awesome intro sequence, you will be thrown into your first battle against some Shinra Guards. This is a great time to familiarize yourself with the ATB system.
Make sure to grab the POTION on the body of the guard before moving on.
This is your first major test. Attack it normally until it raises its tail. When the tail is up, do not attack, or it will counter with its powerful Tail Laser.

Head into Seventh Heaven and talk to Tifa and Barret. You'll receive your payment for the mission (though Barret tries to stiff you!).
Don't forget to visit the Weapon Shop building. On the second floor, you can pick up the ALL MATERIA and learn about equipping it from the tutorial dog.
